The book we will be reading is Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.
We are very excited to be collaborating with other classes as we read and think about this book. We will be collaborating with Mrs. Remedios's class in Brampton, Ontario, Canada and Mrs. Kiabacka's class in Pointe Verde, Florida.
We started thinking about the book today and connected with Mrs. Remedios's class on Padlet. Both classes had a chance to look at the front page and the title and make a prediction about what the book is about based on those clues. Here is our Padlet of predictions!
Now we are going to watch this book trailer about Fish in a Tree.
After watching the book trailer, does your prediction change? What is it now and why do you make that prediction? Is there anything you are wondering about? Parents and visitors to the blog, we would love to hear from you as well!
Dear class,
ReplyDeleteI think that I was wrong when I predicted.
Now I think that a girl is going thru problems and she learns how to get better.
Couse I saw the trailer and I saw that a girl was having problems.
Dear Mason,
DeleteThe title of the book was pretty confusing, wasn't it? From the trailer it looks like the book has nothing to do with fish at all! We will have to see when we start reading where we think the title came from!
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear Class,
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the story will be about but we will find out on tuesday I can't wait to read it tomorrow.
Dear Andrew,
DeleteI am excited to start reading tomorrow too! We have done a lot of predicting, now it's time to get going and read. We will definitely have time to start the book tomorrow.
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear class,
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is that a young girl is having trouble at school. But when a new teacher comes to teach and it all changed.
Dear Mason,
DeleteThe trailer certainly seemed to make it look like a teacher comes in and makes a big difference in this girl's life. It will be fun to see what he does to help her.
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear,class
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is that a girl will have fish in with water in a bowl with water in atree
Dear Jordan,
DeleteIt sure looks like the story is about a girl, and with the title Fish in a Tree it seems there should be a fish and a tree somewhere in the story! We will have to see when we start reading it tomorrow.
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear class
ReplyDeleteI predict that mr.D will help her
Dear Ethan,
DeleteIt did say in the trailer that her new teacher, Mr. D., made a big difference in her life. How do you think he will help her?
Dear class.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is I think the title is about the girl because of the book trailer maybe?
Dear Selena,
DeleteFrom the trailer it looks like the book is about a girl named Ally. Why do you think the author called the book Fish in a Tree?
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear Class,
ReplyDeleteI predict that Mr.D will help Ally be smart.
Dear Joey,
DeleteIt sounds like Mr. D is a great teacher who really helped Ally. I wonder what he could do to help her be smart. What are some ways that teachers help students?
Mrs. Essenburg
My prediction is that he want to go out of the water but his friend says he shud stay in. But he didit lison to him or her. So he went out he lanid in a tree.
ReplyDeleteDear Kaitlyn,
DeleteAre you thinking about the fish in the tree? The trailer didn't talk about fish at all but maybe there is a fish in the story. It is a little confusing because the book and the trailer don't seem to match.
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear class,
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is that a girl who a math project and used a magic math fish to help her with her project.
Dear Julian,
DeleteThat's an interesting prediction! I like how you combined the book trailer about the girl along with the fish from the cover. It will be interesting to see how close your prediction is.
Mrs. Essenburg
Dear class,
ReplyDeleteMy prediction changed I think its about a girl who cant read
but can draw beautifully in her doodles.
The trailer did make it look like Ally has trouble in school. What made you think she is good at art? Can you tell us where you got that clue?
DeleteDear class,
ReplyDeleteMy prediction changed because after I watched the video I noticed that the book does not have anything to do with the cover at all.
Dear Lainie,
DeleteIt certainly does seem like the title of the book doesn't have anything to do with the story. I wonder why the author chose that title? That will be something we will need to think about when we read the book.
Dear class,
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is different.I think it is about a girl that feels like a fish in a tree.
Dear Meredith,
DeleteWhat an interesting idea! I wonder if she does feel like a fish in a tree and if so I wonder why? What would make someone feel like a fish in a tree? Your prediction gives us a lot to think about.
Dear Mrs.Essenburg,I think getting yelled at would make somebody feel like a fish in a tree. Also I have other ideas. Here they are.Getting a F on a test.Having a bad day and being sad.I like your question.
DeleteDear Meredith,
DeleteWe talked about how feeling like a Fish in a Tree might mean feeling all alone and out of place when everyone else seems to feel happy with all of their friends. So then yes, getting yelled at, getting an F on a test and having a bad day would definitely make someone feel like a Fish in a Tree. Good thinking!
Do you think Ally is ever going to stop feeling this way? What do you think needs to happen so that she starts feeling like she fits in?
Dear Mrs.Essenburg,I would think back to the book trailer it says till she meets mr. danials.Do you agree?I like the qestion. Can you ask it to the class? If you do try to answer this one.Do you think the other students will like Ally?
DeleteDear Meredith,
DeleteI will ask the question to the class. You are right, the book trailer definitely hinted that everything changes when she meets Mr. Daniels. So that makes me wonder what it is about him that helps turn Ally's life around? He sounds like an interesting character, I'm excited to get to know him more as we make our way through the book.
Thanks for the great question about Ally, Meredith! I think that once Ally starts to like herself more, she will make more friends and the other kids will like her. I think that is Ally's biggest problem with making friends. If you don't like yourself for who you are, it is very difficult to believe that others will like you.
Thanks for a great question, Meredith, it really made me think!
Dear Class,
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is that the book is about a girl that sees different than other people.
Dear Cordelia,
DeleteWhat made you make that prediction? It might have been the book trailer. I wonder if seeing differently means actually seeing things with our eyes or something else. I think your prediction is something we need to think about s we read the book too.
I predict the book will be about a little girl who can't read.
ReplyDeleteDear Dorothy,
DeleteThe book trailer certainly made it sound like she has difficulties in school, probably in reading and maybe in math. I wonder why a book about a girl who has a hard time reading would be called Fish in a Tree?
I would like to know if everyone enjoyed the story and why you think the author titled the book, "Fish in a Tree?" Does the title mean something about how the girl felt?
ReplyDeleteDear Korin's Mom,
DeleteWhat a thoughtful question! We talked a lot about why we think the author chose "Fish in a Tree" for the title and we had some great thoughts about it. We thought a lot about how a fish in a tree might feel and then we thought about how that might relate to how Ally feels. What great conversations we had. This is a class full of excellent thinkers!
Dear Korins mom,
ReplyDeleteI think that the tittle means something.
I actually know if it does(It does)
What do you think it means?
Dear Mason,
DeleteI would love to hear what you think the title means. I think this title is a great one because it can have lots of meanings. As long as you can explain your meaning and why it makes sense it's okay to have more than one. Those are the best kinds of titles because they mean different things to different people and that's okay.
Dear Mrs. Essenburg
ReplyDeleteI like fish in a tree a lot because when you read you use your voice low then high the feeling sad, mad, happy. I love fish in a tree it is the best book ever.
Dear Shiloh,
DeleteI am so glad that you like the book Fish in a Tree. I agree, it is very good so far, isn't it. I feel so bad for Ally because she feels like everyone else has friends and does well in school and is doing great while she feels out of place and like she's doing everything wrong--just like a fish in a tree. It's fun to read with expression when you read aloud too. That makes the book even more interesting!
I wonder if Ally is ever going to solve her problem of feeling like she's out of place with everyone else. How do you think she might solve the problem?
Dear class,
ReplyDeleteI love this amazing class. I love Fish In a Tree. She has a sketch book of impossible things that I think will come true.Answer to Korins mom,yes because she feels like she stands out like shes a fish in a tree while the others are in a fish bowl.Scroll down to see my picture. My most useful text feature is is the table of contents what do you think your favorite text feature.

Dear Jackson,
DeleteI am so glad to hear that you are loving third grade. I also love my amazing class! What an interesting comment about Ally--about how she feels like she's a fish in a tree where she doesn't belong but everyone else is swimming happily in a fishbowl and they all fit in. I think that's exactly how Ally feels. What an interesting prediction about the sketchbook of impossible things. How do you think those will come true?
I think most people chose the Table of Contents as the most helpful text feature. It is great to know what each chapter is about and what page to find it on.
